The NZ Election

The New Zealand Election

This week in KidsedchatNZ, we are talking about the upcoming New Zealand election. New Zealand's next general election is taking place on 23 September.

Q1: What is an election? What type of election do we have in New Zealand?

An election is the process to choose someone to be their political leader or representative in government. In NZ we have a democratic election.

Q:2 Why do we have elections in New Zealand?
So that we have a say in what happens in our community and country.

Q3: What happens during an election?
In a NZ election you are given two votes, One for your electorate and one for a Party.

Q4: What do you think would happen if we did not have elections and people did not vote?
Nobody would have a say and there would possibly be havoc and the country would only be run by the prime ministers thoughts.

Q5: Who is the Prime Minister of New Zealand? How did he become the prime minister?
Bill English, he got in by being head of the national party and they got the most seats which means he was voted in to become prime minister.

Q6: Why do you think it is important that people vote in elections?
So that they have a say on how their country or town is run.

Q7: If you became Prime Minister what is the first thing you would change?
I would sort out homeless shelters for all of the homeless.

Q8: How do you think our government can make New Zealand ‘more awesome’ like the Kid President?
Make more children friendly spaces around NZ so kids can learn anytime.

Q9: What do you think the Prime Minister’s main job is during the day?
I don't know maybe going and visiting places around the country?

Q10: Even though you can’t vote what are some ways we can make sure our voices get heard?
Maybe donate to a fundraiser or start a fundraiser.
